Falling into autumn means crisp nights, pumpkin pies, and the return of sweaters&scarves&hats&boots. As fall progresses into winter, more and more clothes come out of storage, and I begin wearing 25% of my closet to keep warm. I’m all for layering, but things start to get a little messy when I come home and need to undress – scarves get tossed on the couch, hats get thrown behind the sofa, and mittens get placed in the sink. Essentially, fall is the beginning of clothing mayhem.
To combat the chaos and stay a little organized, I created a coat rack out of cardboard letters and wire hangers. 4 steps to coat rack: insert the hanger handle into the bottom of the letter, decorate the letter with tacky glue, and then spray paint in the color of your choice. Here are some photos of the process:
Maybe I’m missing something, but how do those letters hold onto the hanger to be able to hold the weight of the coats?! The letters look like they would give out or the hanger would slide right out. I must be missing something 😛

I just used heavy duty double sided tape that is used for large frames&paintings. the one i used says it can hold 12 pounds, so hopefully that should cover things. i will tell you, however, that i spent all of dinner just waiting for the THUNK sound that lets me know something has fallen 🙂 so far so good though!!
Ahhh, that makes more sense now 🙂
Looks pretty! It’s not even that cold yet and already I’ve noticed a large amount of my clothes is by the door, despite having a coat-rail and shoe cupboard it still overflows!
i wish there was a solution for doing something with all your stuff at restaurants and bars in the winter. if a place doesn’t have coatcheck, it always makes me giggle how full the table or booth gets with all our winter gear 🙂
very creative! I’m already thinking how to incorporate this on my own wall project. Aside from the IG pics I’m going to use to decorate my room’s wall, I’ll probably do this too. Yay! I’ll be a little bit organized by then. lol
i’d love to see pictures of your wall 🙂 and, FYI, use tons and tons of picture frame tape on the back of the letters so they stick super well 🙂
Noted! thanks for the addition. I’ll probably look for them too. I’m starting from scratch! My walls are never painted lol
what a cute idea! our house is the worst in winter….it’s like a winter coat and mitten tornado came through every night!
Such a great idea! I’m always leaving some kind of trail of scarves and mittens behind me as I enter our place…this is awesome! 🙂
I think I need to come up with a shorter word to hang the one jacket I *may* need for about a week in the Florida winter. Truth be told, I miss the seasons. Enjoy the variety 😉
haha, the word “lucky” comes to mind, but that’s even longer… 🙂 enjoy the sun that we all miss!
What a darling idea! I always see those cute craft letters but never know what to do with them (I’m not really one for knickknack type things so turning them into something useful like these hooks is right up my alley). I am totally pinning this to try for myself 😉
are you a big pinner? i’d love to follow you (i’m a little bit addicted to that site.. ) send me your link 🙂
I absolutely love fall! I love hearing that you do, too! Doesn’t it just feel great to wear all those fabulous layers and sip hot apple cider? You’re going to love fall in Minneapolis!
i grew up in arizona, so it was a hard adjustment at first, but now i crave the changing of the seasons — i keep telling my husband that we’re not moving anywhere else 🙂
Such a cute idea, i love it! I’ve already begun to break out my boots and scarves and sweaters and coats! Unfortunately summer is leaving us now 😦 but i love my warm comfy clothes and fall is an amazing time of year!
Do you live in the Midwest?
Ah! What great idea xx
This is a fun idea!
These are super cute! I love them!
Oooh, I love these! Might have to do some weekend crafting…
What a great and cute idea! I am going to do this in my entry way. Thanks!
