better blogs

Ask a blogger what they like best about their work and they’ll probably mention something about creativity or community; in all likelihood, their answer will include a combination of the two things.

Connecting with the designers behind blogs – the writers, photographers, crafters, dreamers – inspires me to live more creatively, but it also ingrains me in a supportive community of makers.

What makes this community so strong?  Blogging brings individuals together based on affinity rather than geography, and so the ties that bind solidify pretty gosh darn fast.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are approximately 452,000 bloggers in America.  With nearly half-a-million people blogging, it might seem like a daunting task to find a niche of people that just get you, right?

Not in my experience.  A blog, with instant access to thoughts and ideas and outtakes from daily life, is a bit like an open diary.  When we come across a blog that resonates with us, we know it right away, and we begin to build an index of kindred spirits.
The self-proclaimed queen of the home, Martha Stewart, attacked bloggers for their lack of expertise, “Who are these bloggers? They’re not editors at Vogue magazine…I mean, there are bloggers writing recipes that aren’t tested, that aren’t necessarily very good, or are copies of everything that really good editors have created and done.”  Worried about your empire, Ms. S? You should be.

Thing is, personality is the best part of the blogging world.  Instead of blindly following the rules of Martha (or whoever else we’re told is an expert), we can learn from people that we respect and admire and want to meet for brunch.  Bloggers have budgets and struggles and hopes that we can relate to.  More often than that not, the advice of bloggers feels more relevant than the ideas of an executive writing from a corporate office in New York  (no Martha, I am not interested in learning how to decorate my guest-house, but I’ll gladly take tips for decorating a studio apartment from Design Love Fest).

With all my love for bloggers and their inspiring creativity, I’ve decided to create a page dedicated to Better Blogs.  Click the link and meet the girls that make me smile every single day ♥
